Below is a simplified step-by-step overview of how to run for office as a Democrat in New York State. Click here for the full document.
Local offices often have the biggest impact on daily life. If you’re unsure, the Democratic Committee can help you find an office that matches your interests, schedule, and experience.
Your first step should always be to reach out to us.
We can:
Explain the responsibilities of the office
Confirm eligibility requirements
Help you plan a timeline
Provide mentors and campaign guidance
Important: Do this early — ideally winter or early spring of the election year.
In most cases you must:
Be at least 18 years old
Be a registered voter
Live in the district/municipality you want to represent
Be registered in the Democratic Party (for running on the Democratic line)
(Some positions like Town Justice have additional legal requirements.)
To appear on the Democratic ballot in New York, you must collect petition signatures from registered Democrats who live in your district.
Key facts:
Petitioning typically begins in late February or early March
You usually have about 5–6 weeks to collect signatures
You must collect a minimum number of valid signatures (we will tell you your specific number)
It is strongly recommended to collect 2–3× the minimum in case some are invalid
The committee will provide:
Petition forms
Training
Maps and voter lists
Volunteers if available
Completed petitions must be filed with the Montgomery County Board of Elections by the deadline (usually early April).
Missing this deadline means you cannot appear on the primary ballot.
If more than one Democrat files for the same office, a primary election will be held in June.
If you are the only Democrat to file, you automatically become the Democratic nominee.
After filing, you begin campaigning for the November General Election.
Typical activities include:
Door-to-door canvassing
Attending community events
Social media outreach
Fundraising (usually small local donations)
Candidate forums and debates
Local elections are very personal — meeting voters matters far more than expensive advertising.
All candidates must:
Open a campaign finance account
Keep records of donations and expenses
File periodic reports with the NYS Board of Elections
We will help you understand these requirements.
The General Election takes place on the first Tuesday in November.
Winners typically take office on January 1 (some village offices vary).
The Montgomery County Democratic Committee supports first-time candidates every year. We provide guidance, training, and volunteers so you can focus on talking to voters and sharing your ideas.
If you have ever thought, “Someone should do something about that,” — you might be the right person to run.
