From village boards and town councils to state and federal offices, we help recruit, support, and elect leaders who are dedicated to improving the quality of life for everyone in Montgomery County.</p><h2>What We Do</h2><p><strong>Support Local Candidates</strong><br>We identify and support candidates who share Democratic values fairness, opportunity, responsible government, and equal rights. We provide resources, training, and grassroots organizing to help them run successful campaigns.</p><p><strong>Engage the Community</strong><br>We host monthly meetings, educational forums, volunteer events, and community conversations. Our goal is to make local government approachable and to give residents a voice in the decisions that affect their daily lives.</p><p><strong>Promote Civic Participation</strong><br>Voting is only one part of democracy. We encourage residents to stay informed, attend meetings, serve on local boards, volunteer, and advocate for issues they care about. Whether you are new to politics or have been involved for years, there is a place for you here.</p><p><strong>Register and Educate Voters</strong><br>We assist with voter registration, share election information, and help residents understand how local government works. The Montgomery County Democrats can help you decide what office to run for, get on the ballot, and fundraise. We have decades of experience in all areas of politics to help you run a successful campaign. If you’re unsure, the Democratic Committee can help you find an office that matches your interests, schedule, and experience.</p><h4>Contact the Democratic Committee</h4><p>Your first step should always be to reach out to us.<br>We can:</p><ul><li><p>Explain the responsibilities of the office</p></li><li><p>Confirm eligibility requirements</p></li><li><p>Help you plan a timeline</p></li><li><p>Provide mentors and campaign guidance</p></li></ul><p><strong>Important:</strong> Do this early — ideally winter or early spring of the election year.</p><h4>Meet Eligibility Requirements</h4><p>In most cases you must:</p><ul><li><p>Be at least 18 years old</p></li><li><p>Be a registered voter</p></li><li><p>Live in the district/municipality you want to represent</p></li><li><p>Be registered in the Democratic Party (for running on the Democratic line)</p></li></ul><p>(Some positions like Town Justice have additional legal requirements.)</p><h4>Circulating Petitions (The Most Important Step)</h4><p>To appear on the Democratic ballot in New York, you must collect petition signatures from registered Democrats who live in your district.</p><p><strong>Key facts:</strong></p><ul><li><p>Petitioning typically begins in <strong>late February or early March</strong></p></li><li><p>You usually have about <strong>5–6 weeks</strong> to collect signatures</p></li><li><p>You must collect a minimum number of valid signatures (we will tell you your specific number)</p></li><li><p>It is strongly recommended to collect <strong>2–3× the minimum</strong> in case some are invalid</p></li></ul><p>The committee will provide:</p><ul><li><p>Petition forms</p></li><li><p>Training</p></li><li><p>Maps and voter lists</p></li><li><p>Volunteers if available</p></li></ul><h4>File Your Petitions</h4><p>Completed petitions must be filed with the <strong>Montgomery County Board of Elections</strong> by the deadline (usually early April).</p><p>Missing this deadline means you cannot appear on the primary ballot.</p><h4>Primary Election (If Needed)</h4><p>If more than one Democrat files for the same office, a primary election will be held in <strong>June</strong>.<br>If you are the only Democrat to file, you automatically become the Democratic nominee.</p><h4>Campaigning</h4><p>After filing, you begin campaigning for the <strong>November General Election</strong>.</p><p>Typical activities include:</p><ul><li><p>Door-to-door canvassing</p></li><li><p>Attending community events</p></li><li><p>Social media outreach</p></li><li><p>Fundraising (usually small local donations)</p></li><li><p>Candidate forums and debates</p></li></ul><p>Local elections are very personal — meeting voters matters far more than expensive advertising.</p><h4>Financial Disclosure (Required)</h4><p>All candidates must:</p><ul><li><p>Open a campaign finance account</p></li><li><p>Keep records of donations and expenses</p></li><li><p>File periodic reports with the NYS Board of Elections</p></li></ul><p>We will help you understand these requirements.</p><h4>Election Day</h4><p>The General Election takes place on the <strong>first Tuesday in November</strong>.<br>Winners typically take office on <strong>January 1</strong> (some village offices vary).</p><h2>You Don’t Have to Do This Alone</h2><p>The Montgomery County Democratic Committee supports first-time candidates every year.
